More Than 500 Million Christians Live With Restricted Access to the Bible

A new Bible Access Initiative report ranks the hardest places to own Scripture — Afghanistan to Iran — and the places where Bibles simply run out, led by Congo, Ethiopia and Nigeria

The short answer

According to International Christian Concern, reporting the Bible Access Initiative's research, more than 500 million Christians live in nations with restricted access to the Bible, and more than 125 million cannot access Scripture in any format. The most restricted nations are Afghanistan, Yemen, Somalia, North Korea, Eritrea, Mauritania, Turkmenistan, Libya, Sudan and Iran; the greatest Bible shortages are in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria, India, Uganda, Tanzania, China, Indonesia, Angola and Mozambique.

Most readers of this site own more than one Bible. More than 500 million Christians live in nations where getting even one is restricted — and more than 125 million believers cannot access Scripture in any format at all.

Those are the headline findings from the Bible Access Initiative, a collaboration of several ministries, reported this week by International Christian Concern.

Two Different Problems

"Over 500 million Christians live where Bible access is restricted, and 125 million-plus can't get Scripture in any format. Some face bans; many more — in fast-growing churches like Nigeria, Ethiopia and Congo — simply face shortages."

The research produced two separate lists, because there are two very different reasons people go without the Bible.

The Bible Restrictions List ranks the nations where owning or sharing Scripture is most dangerous or forbidden:

  1. Afghanistan
  2. Yemen
  3. Somalia
  4. North Korea
  5. Eritrea
  6. Mauritania
  7. Turkmenistan
  8. Libya
  9. Sudan
  10. Iran

The Bible Shortages List ranks the nations where the problem isn't a ban but supply — growing churches that simply can't get enough Bibles:

  1. Democratic Republic of Congo
  2. Ethiopia
  3. Nigeria
  4. India
  5. Uganda
  6. Tanzania
  7. China
  8. Indonesia
  9. Angola
  10. Mozambique

The barriers named include persecution, poverty, illiteracy, political restrictions and lack of internet access.

Why the Second List Matters

The first list is the one that makes headlines. The second may be the more surprising: several of the world's fastest-growing churches — Nigeria, Ethiopia, Congo — are on it. The church is growing faster than the supply of Scripture can keep up. In places like these, persecution and shortage often overlap.

"Please continue to pray for, and support initiatives and projects that increase the supply and availability of God's precious Word for believers around the world," an ICC staffer said.

What You Can Do

The Great Commission has always depended on Scripture in people's hands and in their language — it's why Adoniram Judson spent decades on a Burmese translation, a story we told this week. Pray for believers on both lists, and consider supporting a reputable Bible translation or distribution ministry.

Key Takeaway

Over 500 million Christians live where Bible access is restricted, and 125 million-plus can't get Scripture in any format. Some face bans; many more — in fast-growing churches like Nigeria, Ethiopia and Congo — simply face shortages.

Biblical Perspective

"Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4). Paul asked, "How can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard?" (Romans 10:14). The Psalms treat God's Word as more precious than gold (Psalm 19:10) — a reality believers in restricted nations know better than most.

"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path."

— Psalm 119:105 (NIV)

Pray With Us

Father, thank You for Your Word. We pray for the more than 500 million Christians who can't freely read it, and for the 125 million who have no access at all. Open doors in Afghanistan, North Korea, Iran and every restricted nation. Multiply Bibles in Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria and every place where the church is outgrowing its supply. Make us grateful and generous. In Jesus' name, amen.

Declarations to Speak

  • ›God's Word will not return to Him empty!
  • ›Scripture will reach every nation and every language!
  • ›No ban can stop the Word of God!

Take Action

  • 1Pray through the ten restricted nations this week, one a day.
  • 2Thank God for your own access to Scripture — and read it today.
  • 3Consider supporting a reputable Bible translation or distribution ministry.
