Christian Activist Joshua Wong Sentenced to 10 More Years in Hong Kong
Wong, 30, was due for release in January 2027. A guilty plea to "collusion with foreign forces" under Beijing's national security law now keeps him behind bars until late 2036
The short answer
On 5 November 2026, Christian pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong, 30, was sentenced to a further 10 years in prison in Hong Kong after pleading guilty to conspiracy to collude with foreign forces under Beijing's 2020 national security law, according to Christian Today. Wong, in prison since November 2020, had been expected to be released in January 2027 and now faces remaining behind bars until late 2036. It is his second conviction under the law.
Joshua Wong was a teenager when he became the face of Hong Kong's 2014 Umbrella Movement. On Thursday, at 30, he was sentenced to another 10 years in prison.
What Happened
Wong pleaded guilty to conspiracy to collude with foreign forces under the national security law Beijing imposed on Hong Kong in 2020 — his second conviction under it. He was already serving four years and eight months, handed down in November 2024, for conspiracy to commit subversion.

A Faith That Shaped His Activism
Wong was raised in a Christian family and has spoken before about how his faith shaped his campaigning, linking his pursuit of justice to the Christian responsibility to be "salt and light in society." He co-founded the party Demosisto, which disbanded when the national security law came into force.
Reaction
"He could have run. He could have lived in exile. He chose courage." — Tom Tugendhat, former UK security minister
Lord Alton wrote that Wong's "passion for freedom, democracy and humanity must continue to inspire those of us who enjoy the freedom which Joshua is denied." Former Conservative leader Iain Duncan Smith called the sentence "an absolute disgrace" and urged the UK government to impose sanctions and demand the release of Wong and Jimmy Lai. The rights group Hong Kong Watch called for his immediate and unconditional release.
Why It Matters
Hong Kong was long a haven for Christian freedom on China's doorstep — a place where churches, Bible printers and ministries to the mainland could work openly. Wong's sentence is one more sign of how much has changed. Aid to the Church in Need's 2026 report warns of intensifying pressure on churches across China, where leaders of the Zion Church remain in custody.

Biblical Perspective
"You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world" (Matthew 5:13-14) — words Wong has linked to his own pursuit of justice. "Remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison" (Hebrews 13:3).
