Make The Great Commission Great Again
Why disciple multiplication is the only strategy that can reach the world — and how your Oikos is your mission field
The last words of Jesus were not a suggestion. Matthew 28:19 is a command: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."
Yet today, with 2.4 billion Christians worldwide, 3.1 billion people have still never heard the Gospel. Over 7,400 people groups remain unreached. The Great Commission is not yet complete.
So what's the most effective strategy to reach the world? The math gives us a clear answer.
"Disciple multiplication — not church addition — is the only strategy that can reach the world. Your Oikos is your starting point. One disciple who makes one disciple every year can, in 33 years, reach more people than 10,000 churches adding 1,000 members annually."
Click to copy and shareTHE ADDITION MODEL: 10,000 CHURCHES
If you plant 10,000 new churches and each church adds 1,000 new Christians every year, you're adding 10 million believers annually. After 10 years: 100 million disciples. After 33 years: 330 million disciples. Impressive — but still falling short of the world's population, which grows faster than addition can keep up.
THE MULTIPLICATION MODEL: 1 DISCIPLE
Now consider a single disciple who makes one disciple every year, and each new disciple does the same. The numbers double annually: - Year 1: 2 disciples - Year 10: 1,024 disciples - Year 20: Over 1 million disciples - Year 33: Over 8.5 billion people — exceeding the entire world population
Multiplication starts agonizingly slow but becomes unstoppable. The turning point comes around years 20-24, after which the growth becomes explosive. This is the only strategy that can actually keep pace with global population growth.
YOUR OIKOS: YOUR PERSONAL MISSION FIELD
Oikos (Greek: οἶκος) means "household" or "sphere of influence." Your Oikos is the 8-15 people God has already placed in your life — family, friends, colleagues, neighbours — who need the Gospel.
The Oikos Map is a powerful tool developed by Youth For Christ Australia to help you identify and pray for the people in your sphere. It's not about cold evangelism or street preaching (though those have their place). It's about being intentional with the relationships you already have.
Jesus didn't go to strangers first. He went to fishermen He knew. He went to tax collectors in their homes. He went to Zacchaeus. He worked through relationships.
THE CHALLENGE
This week, build your Oikos Map. Write down the 8-15 people closest to you. Pray for each one by name. Ask God to open doors. Look for divine appointments. Be the disciple who makes a disciple.
If every believer did this, the math would take care of the rest.

Biblical Perspective
The Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20) is not a program — it is the final command of Jesus before His ascension. The early church understood this: they went house to house (Acts 2:46), they discipled in homes (Acts 5:42), and they turned the world upside down (Acts 17:6) not through mega-institutions but through multiplying disciples.
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you."
— Matthew 28:19-20 (ESV)
Pray With Us
Lord, forgive us for treating the Great Commission as optional. Stir our hearts with Your passion for the lost. Show us our Oikos — the people You have placed in our lives who need You. Give us boldness to love them, serve them, and share the Gospel with them. Let us be disciples who make disciples. Let the multiplication begin. Amen.
