The Church Is Still Under Pressure
The pressure on his congregation hasn't stopped:
- 14 June: a church gathering at a hotel in Jiangyou was broken up, and more than 30 members were detained.
- 10 September: police detained 11 Christians, most of them over 60, at a teahouse reading group.
- 23 September: two of them, Wu Wuqing and Shen Xiaoqing, were released after a 10-day detention.
CSW president Mervyn Thomas said the campaign "hurts the reputation China holds as a United Nations Human Rights Council member."
Why Wang Yi Matters
Early Rain became one of the best-known unregistered churches in China because it refused to hide — and its pastor wrote, before his arrest, that he would not resist with violence but would not stop being faithful. That is the shape of the underground church under pressure: not rebellion, but refusal to stop worshipping.
We've reported on Zion Church's leaders and the wider pressure on China's house churches. Wang Yi's case is the one that most needs prayer this week.

Biblical Perspective
Paul wrote some of his most hopeful words from prison: "what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel" (Philippians 1:12). Scripture never treats imprisoned believers as forgotten; it commands the church to remember them as if bound with them (Hebrews 13:3) and records that "the church was earnestly praying to God" for Peter in his cell (Acts 12:5).
"So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him."
— Acts 12:5 (NIV)
Pray With Us
Lord, we lift up Pastor Wang Yi. Heal his body, strengthen his heart, and give him the care he needs. Comfort his wife and son. Protect the members of Early Rain Covenant Church — especially the elderly believers detained for meeting together. Let the gospel advance in China through their faithfulness, and bring Wang Yi home. In Jesus' name, amen.
