What Does It Mean to Be Born Again? Jesus' Answer in John 3
Jesus told a respected religious leader he needed a new birth. Here is what He meant, how it happens, what changes — and what being born again is not
The short answer
To be born again means to receive new spiritual life from God through the Holy Spirit when you put your trust in Jesus Christ. The phrase comes from Jesus' words to Nicodemus: "Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again" (John 3:3). It is God's work, not self-improvement — those who receive Christ are "born of God" (John 1:12–13) and become "a new creation" (2 Corinthians 5:17). It is received by faith (John 3:16) and shows itself in a changed life over time.
Many of the testimonies on this site describe the same turning point: someone who was lost, addicted or indifferent who now says, simply, "I was born again." The phrase is famous — and often misunderstood. It comes from one of the most important conversations in the Bible.
Where the Phrase Comes From
In John 3, a man named Nicodemus came to Jesus at night. He was a Pharisee, a member of the Jewish ruling council and a respected teacher — someone who, by every outward measure, was already religious.
"Being born again is receiving new spiritual life from God through the Holy Spirit when you trust Jesus (John 3:3–16). It isn't self-improvement or a feeling or a special category of Christian — it's God making someone new, and it shows itself in a changed life."

Nicodemus was baffled: "How can someone be born when they are old?" Jesus explained that He meant a different kind of birth: "No one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit" (John 3:5–6). The Greek word translated "again" can also mean "from above" — a birth that comes from God.
What It Means
Being born again means receiving new spiritual life from God. Scripture describes it in several ways:
- A new heart. God promised through Ezekiel, "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh" (Ezekiel 36:26).
- Becoming God's child. "To all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God — children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God" (John 1:12–13).
- A new creation. "If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here!" (2 Corinthians 5:17).
- A living hope. God "has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead" (1 Peter 1:3).
How It Happens
Jesus answered that Himself, just a few verses later, in the Bible's best-known sentence: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16).
New birth is God's work. Jesus compared the Spirit to the wind — you can't see it, but you see its effects (John 3:8). Our part is to respond to the gospel: to turn from sin and trust Jesus. If you want to understand that message clearly, read our guide on what the gospel is.
What Being Born Again Is Not
- Not self-improvement. Nicodemus was already moral and religious. Jesus said he needed something only God could give.
- Not a feeling. Some people experience a dramatic moment; others come to faith quietly. Both are real if they rest on Christ.
- Not a label for a type of Christian. In Scripture, every follower of Jesus is born again — it isn't an extra category.
- Not the finish line. A newborn needs to grow. Peter told new believers to "crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation" (1 Peter 2:2).
What Changes
New birth shows itself over time: a new love for God and other people, a hunger for His Word, a growing hatred of sin and a desire to obey. It doesn't make anyone perfect overnight, but it does make them new. That's why testimonies of changed lives — like those we report — carry such weight: they're evidence of something only God does.
What Happened to Nicodemus?
John doesn't leave him in the dark. Nicodemus later defended Jesus before the council (John 7:50–51), and after the crucifixion he brought about seventy-five pounds of spices to help bury Jesus' body (John 19:39). The man who came at night ended up standing with Jesus in the open.
If You Want to Be Born Again
You don't need special words. Tell God honestly that you know you need Him, that you believe Jesus died for your sins and rose again, and that you're putting your trust in Him. "If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved" (Romans 10:9). Then tell someone, find a church, and read our guide on what to do after you accept Jesus.

Biblical Perspective
Jesus taught Nicodemus that "no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again" (John 3:3), born "of water and the Spirit" (John 3:5). Paul calls it a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17) and "the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit" (Titus 3:5); Peter calls it "new birth into a living hope" (1 Peter 1:3).
"Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again."
— John 3:3 (NIV)
