In Nigeria, a woman who leaves Islam for Christianity is usually counting what she will lose before she counts what she has gained.

Family, first. Then often the home, the marriage, the inheritance, the village she grew up in. Then, frequently, her physical safety — because in significant parts of the country, a convert lives under a standing threat that the authorities are not always willing to take seriously.

Nigeria is the most dangerous country on earth to be a Christian. Open Doors' 2026 World Watch List records 3,490 Christians killed for their faith there in the last reporting year — roughly seventy-two percent of the global total.

In an environment like that, converts are among the most exposed believers of all. Refugees and displaced Christians can sometimes find a community that shares their story. A convert from Islam often cannot go home and has no community to receive her.

A ruling in her favour does something beyond protecting one person. It establishes that this outcome is possible. It gives the next lawyer something to point to, and the next woman a reason to believe the courts are worth trying.
