'What a Night, What a God': The College Revival Reaches Pepperdine

"What a night!! What a God!!"

That was UniteUS founder Tonya Prewett's summary of what happened when the campus revival movement arrived at Pepperdine University in Malibu. Thousands of students gathered. Hundreds professed faith in Christ. Many were baptised.

The Number That Reframes This

Individually, a campus outreach is a good night. Cumulatively, the figure UniteUS now reports is harder to file away: more than 100,000 students reached since autumn 2023, across more than two dozen large campus gatherings, with tens of thousands reported to have given their lives to Christ.

That is not a season. That is three academic years of sustained movement, running through the ordinary grind of semesters, exams and turnover.

What Was Actually Said

The preaching at Pepperdine was not complicated.

Madi Prewett Troutt — the founder's daughter — told the crowd: "There's something inside of you that needs to be resurrected." Her husband Grant Troutt's charge was even shorter: receive God's love "everyday."

Pepperdine student Izzy Latala's reaction was the kind of thing that does not translate to a transcript: "The King of Kings! The Lord of Lords!"

Why Malibu Matters

Pepperdine is a Christian university, and it would be easy to discount a revival on a campus that already has chapel in the calendar. That reading misses something.

Nominal faith is its own kind of lostness, and it is frequently harder to break than outright unbelief. A student who has heard the gospel their whole life and never surrendered to it is not an easier case than an atheist — often the opposite. Familiarity inoculates.

So hundreds of students at a Christian university crossing the line from cultural adherence to actual surrender is not a lesser story than a conversion at a secular school. In some ways it is a harder one.

The Test That Is Coming

UniteUS is now three years into something, and three years is long enough that the honest question has changed. It is no longer "is this real?" It is "where are the 100,000?"

The movement's own leaders would say the same. A campus outreach can gather a crowd; only a local church can disciple one. The measure of this will not be the footage from Malibu. It will be whether, in ten years, there are pastors, missionaries, teachers and parents who trace their faith back to a night on a lawn.
